Mastery of the tools of personal work methodology is the “backbone” of methodological competence in an organization and the touchstone of a manager’s professional craftsmanship. These include the professional meeting, the report, task design, budgeting and budget management, performance appraisal, and the deliberate shedding of yesterday so that the new can take its place.

These tools form the bridge between effectiveness and efficiency. Principles determine what the “right things” are; tools make it possible to do those right things “the right way”. The rapid development of digitalization will not diminish their importance – on the contrary, it will make them even more essential while at the same time facilitating their use.

Without mastery of these tools, there can be no effectiveness, productivity, or profitability. Nor can there be sound teamwork, innovation, successful change, or the ability to seize opportunities.

In principle, these tools can be learned independently, but they are not innate. Often, guidance from experienced individuals is helpful. One learns to lead meetings professionally most quickly by observing skilled leaders in action. What matters most is continuous practice and refinement through personal application.

Professionalism in the use of managerial tools is the lever that enables one to handle ever larger and more complex tasks without losing physical, mental, and emotional balance. It allows negative stress to be controlled while harnessing the energy of positive stress.

The Hungarian-Canadian stress researcher Hans Selye distinguished between distress and eustress. Mastery of one’s “craft” is a prerequisite for experiencing positive, uplifting stress. Being expected to perform without the necessary tools produces negative stress – an ordeal.

Those who can calmly respond to the question, “Are you under stress?” by saying, “I have a lot to do, but stress – no,” usually demonstrate high methodological professionalism. In major tasks, this is paired with trained concentration – like musicians before a solo or physicians before high-risk operations. All senses are focused on success, supported by inner composure and calm breathing. One knows one can do it and then does it.

This professionalism is the foundation of self-confidence, personal sovereignty, and health. Not stress, but the joy of one’s own effectiveness. One takes on a task – and solves it. Therein lies the secret of those leaders who manage an immense workload and, precisely because of it, remain calm, composed, and sovereign.
