Management is often mistakenly understood as the art of becoming rich, famous, or powerful. Professional management has as little to do with that as a cheap TV crime show has with real police work.

There is fundamental confusion about what management is, what it should be, and what it must not be. Many definitions are useless, nonsensical, and misleading.

This confusion is a major source of misunderstandings, lack of progress, fashion trends, and the ineffectiveness of management training.

Below are some representations of what management is not.

  1. Management is not status, rank, or privileges
  2. Management is not business administration
  3. Management is not limited to business
  4. Management is not only people management
  5. Management is not about making deals
  6. Management is not the same as being an entrepreneur
  7. Management is not only top management
  8. Management is not identical with US-style management
  9. Management is not identical with MBA programs
  10. Management is not identical with technical tasks
  11. Management is not leadership

Detailed explanations of each point can be found in my book “Management – The Essence of the Craft”.
